Sustainability starts with the planning
In a high-rise building in Berlin-Mitte - built in the 1970s - we collaborated with morgen architekten and renowned manufacturers in the contract sector to create a long-stay apartment that is fully committed to sustainability and healthy living. With a prescribed budget, the aim was to show that this is also economical. The result: guests are rewarded with a healthy and sustainable living environment on the one hand and a magnificent view over Berlin on the other.
Wall, floor and decorative fabrics
ClayTec clayboards were used for the room instead of standard drywall made of plasterboard. This natural building material is available in almost unlimited quantities and has the ability to absorb water vapor from the room air and release it again when dry. The filter effect binds or even neutralizes pollutants and odours. In combination with Keim's mineral "Biosil" interior paints made from purely natural raw materials, potassium silicate and mineral pigments without problematic ingredients such as solvents or plasticizers, all the prerequisites for a healthy living environment are created.
When it came to flooring, "Linoleum" from Tarkett was used - a product that is durable and made from carefully selected, natural materials. It is also recyclable after use. It also leaves the factory in a climate-positive "cradle to gate" manner and has the smallest ecological footprint in its category throughout its entire life cycle. What's more, depending on the substrate, it does not need to be fully glued down. A fitted carpet from Ege, which is "Cradle to Cradle Bronze" certified, has a soft pile and is pleasant to the touch. Delius products were chosen for the decorative and upholstery fabrics, whose ReTurn range makes a real contribution to conserving resources.
Bathroom details
The bathroom features a shower tray from Ideal Standard, which contains recycled materials following an ecological manufacturing process and is produced using 100% green energy. The wall tiles from Ariostea Ultra Pietre, which are 100 centimetres wide and long, have GreenGuard certification (EMAS and Cradle-to-Cradle Certified Silver).
Grohe was chosen for the fittings. Since 2020, all eight Lixil production plants worldwide have been CO2-neutral - the same applies to the German logistics centers. All manufacturing processes are also being converted in line with a 360-degree sustainability approach.
In this respect, the three letters of DSH's company name stand for design, sustainability and hospitality in this project.
